Freitod are a German band who have found their way onto the excellent Van label. As one of the members of this band was in the lackluster Wolfthorn I was skeptical that this could be anything good. Freitod may not be great, but this is an interesting and engaging disc of moody Black Metal just the same. The guitar tone has a good bit of post-rock in it, as do the melodies in places, and the vocals are a flat rasp that really does nothing for the music. The melodies are big, open, and very good, really creating a mood and sweeping you into the album. The only problems being that a lot of the songs on this disc end up sounding alike, and the overall effect is of one looooong song. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's a bit repetitive, but it is always long. I would say too long, but this is not a bad album for that, as it still creates atmosphere and an epic feeling, it just lacks focus. |
