Review

I have never really heard a Rage album that wasn't mostly crap, and this one is no different. Rage have this legendary rep, partly just from being around for like 24 years, but really their appeal is a mystery to me. Every Rage album is pretty much the same: a few good songs, then a bunch of filler tracks with indulgent musicianship and poppy choruses. It's clear this band could make killer music, as the talent and skill are obviously there in plenty, but mainman Peavy has an indestructible taste for awful pop melodies and shitty three-part vocal harmonies. This album has one really good tune in "Hunter And Prey", which you will hear if you can get past the crappy chorus on the album opener "The Edge of Darkness". Other shit songs include the hideous "Into the Light", and the wretched jazz/prog stylings of the title track. Every time they produce something good like "Empty Hollow", they go and ruin it with some VH1 shit like "Fatal Grace" or "Connected". This album just has no consistency at all, and it lurches from pop-rock, to classical, to prog, to I-don't-know-what. The music is all over the place, the melodies range from pretty decent to pop garbage, and the songwriting shows flashes of brilliance in among the radio-friendly nonsense Peavy seems to love. I can't see much in the way of reasons to waste time with this.
