So this band has put out three albums without me noticing, but this here is their latest one. Godless Rising are a US band, so much so that I didn't even have to look it up, I just heard one song and I knew it. I like that they are not of the clickety-click school, but they are still not blowing me away. There is a surprising amount of melody going on here, with some almost Gothernburg-style twin-guitar flourishes, but the base here is rooted in old-school Death Metal like Acheron or a less thrashy Morbid Angel. This is an enjoyable disc with a lot of crunch and some startling melodic flair, but the songs themselves don't really grab me, and the overall impression I am left with is just a cut above average. Death fans will like this well enough, as it is heavy and enjoyable, but to my ears Godless Rising are not doing enough to rise above the pack. |
