Well this is an ambitious disc. Locusta are a US band from my birthplace of Colombus, Ohio, and this is their debut album of rather proggy Death Metal. On one hand the production is a bit weak, and the riffs and songs are not that memorable. On the other hand this band's worship and imitation of The Chasm shows excellent taste, and they are clearly striving to be much more than just another Death Metal band. It is refreshing to see a DM band going for complex songwriting without falling into the clickety-click tech trap. True, this may sound more like The Chasm than it really should, but it sounds good for all that, and with all the bands out there imitating Cannibal Corpse, it is fine with me to have some others imitating actual good bands. Locusta's one failing is that their riff and songwriting are not quite up to the level of their ambition, and time will hopefully help with that. I am saying that Locusta are not great now, but they have every possibility of being great in the future. A band to watch closely. |
