My neck hurts... Metal! What this Swedish band doesn't have is originality. But not only are the band members aware of it, they also make no apologies for it. They play what they like and what they like is 80s-style heavy metal, especially the earlier stuff - think the first two or three Iron Maiden albums and there you have a good idea of what Wolf sound like music-wise. Vocals apart, the songs here could very well be mistaken for Maiden songs (a good example is "243", an instrumental), even the bass approaches the Steve Harris style, and the guitar solos are very Maiden-ish as well. The vocals however have more of a power metal style, pretty high-pitched and it takes a few listens to get used to them with this type of music. Now that I've gotten used to them however, I can't get the vocal melodies out of my head. Sometimes I'm so caught into it that I almost start singing aloud on the street. Now that's scary. Can't complain on the musicians either... This is tight and very well played stuff... What else can I say, this rules. Any fan of Maiden, NWOBHM or simply good metal should get this. Lack of originality aside, there's nothing to bitch about here (OK, maybe the cover art... Still beats the crap out of gory-ketchup covers of grind-gore albums anyway.) This may not be original, but I bet I'll still be playing this album 10 years from now, something I can't say of many bands who are original just for the sake of being original but whose stuff wears out after a couple of months. This is good entertaining metal, just the way I like it. |
