Mortal Terror are a band from Germany who have been kicking around since the mid 80's, although We Are The Damned is my first taste of the band. They play a style of death/thrash metal that is entirely their own, and thus hard to draw any major comparisons. This is largely due to the vocal approach, which to be frank; is god damn awful. The dude sounds like he's had one too many down the local before recording. Worse still is that the backing vocals are alright death-style vocals and in all honesty if they'd stuck with their backing vocalist this album would be ten times more enjoyable. It's a shame because as far as my ears are concerned the vocals render what could have been a quality album almost unlistenable. As far as the rest of the music goes it's pretty good, the guitar work is very nice sounding, fairly evil throughout. They're also unafraid to slow things down a little and spew forth some crushing doom moments, the guitar solos are nicely done too. However as good as things stand I just can't get over the vocals, it's been unbelievably hard to have a full sitting with the album. If you can find enjoyment out of the vocals you'll no doubt find this a decent album. I'd certainly recommend listening to a few tracks before making a purchase though. As for me, I won't be listening to this one again in a hurry. Check them out and judge for yourself. |
