More melodeath anyone? I would have really expected the Gothenburg pool to be dry by now, but here we have a guitar player from perpetual also-rans Disdain putting out a solo album that parties like it's 1999. No, really, this album has that definitive melodeath sound like it was recorded in '99, or maybe 2001. I don't know, has it been long enough from the In Flames/Dark Tranquility heyday to qualify this as 'retro'? I would say this is bad, but it's not really. There are some good grooves here, some driving riffage and hooky vocal lines in the clean singing, though the harsh vocals are pretty awful. Mostly My Dying Day is notable for trying to revive a sound that only recently died, and that death was overdue in any case. This is not a badly done album, but what is the point of it? |
