This is a disc of ambitious Heavy Metal that tries so hard to be badass it becomes sort of tiresome. Lord Volture have mastered the outward trappings of metal: heavy riffs, galloping rhythms, wailing vocals – without grasping the essentials of good songwriting. Beast of Thunder wants to be awesome, but the riffs are stock, the songs are hackneyed and uninteresting, and the performances are totally lackluster. This is an album with nothing really wrong with it, but it still has no real hooks or songs that stay with you and make you want to listen to it. To me this comes across as an album of metal posturing that completely fails to get me excited. Rote and by the numbers. |
