This is a Canadian band, and while I am leery of 'atmospheric' music in general, I find that this is an enjoyably visceral disc of folkish Black Metal. Ancestral Anthems is a moody work mixing some solidly crushing guitars with a lot of folky synths and surprisingly visceral harsh vocals. There are rough similarities to early Summoning, but Protokult are far from being that imitative. Some of these songs speed up enough to qualify as actually vicious, while never losing the folky vibe. Here is a band that understands that "atmospheric" means having atmosphere, not just being slow. This is a cool album from a band that will bear watching. |
