Epicrenel are a new Finnish Power Metal band shopping their demo around. A melodic metal promo is always welcome after the glut of Death/Black I always get, but I'm not sure this band is ready for the big time. Epicrenel have a big, bombastic style roughly similar to bands like Rhapsody of Fire, while not being as keyboard driven. The production is big and booming, while maybe a bit too mushy for this kind of music. The playing is solid if uninspired, and vocalist Christian Palin has a decent if unexceptional voice. Overall I'd have to say that's my problem with the whole album – it just does not have anything that jumps out as great. No one song, performance, or sound really stands out as superior or memorable. The band keeps the speed and energy up, and this demo never drags and it remains enjoyable, but it doesn't stick in your mind afterwards. This is the kind of music that gets called "decent" as a way of saying "I can't find anything wrong with it."
