This last Frostscald Records haul brought home only music from Sweden, good music that is! I did review a couple of releases from Svart before and liked them, but I was not expecting to hear something this good. Looks like solitary composer and multi-instrumentalist Draug has reached a certain maturity in his songwriting.
Förlorad is still to be considered a black metal opus, even if the fast tempos are now gone. Three compositions simply called "I" – "II" and "III", but a total playing time of over 74 minutes is not radio-friendly. The opening track lasts 14 minutes; followed by a 20 minutes one, only to finish by an epic 39 minutes composition. This release might be tedious for some listeners. I must confess that "III" is somewhat stretching things out .This track is mesmerizing and full of long lasting musical breaks that contain very melancholic arpeggios. I believe some special pedal or maybe some keyboards were also used. Draug's vocals are of ghostly nature on this specific number. Opening track, "I" is a much shorter version of "III" and comes with clean arpeggios, ambience, clean vocals and a depressive mood. Now, let's talk about "II", since this is what makes this album so great. Starting again with melancholic arpeggios, it really becomes intense and depressive when the fat bass and distorted guitar work come into play. This is the darkest type of doom black metal I've heard in quite some times. On this song, Draug's vocals are of a wicked deep raspy style, making "II" a hellish, crushing and amazingly oppressive composition.
As you can see, Förlorad is a must for those into doom and depressive black metal arts.
