This is a short EP from San Francisco Doomsters Jex Thoth. I am usually leery of any kind of psychedelia in Doom, but I really enjoyed this band's self-titled album a few years back. Jex Thoth mix a retro doomy sound with a 70's kind of vibe without losing the essential dark nature of their music, and their neopagan lyrical themes were cool enough for me, so I wasn't sorry to see this disc in the mailbox. This is short, which annoys me, as I want another real album from them, but the music here is the same kind of smooth, involving 'lounge doom' as I was expecting, and is thoroughly entertaining for its short length. Frontwoman Jessica "Jex" Toth has stepped up as a singer, and her vocals are darker and more expressive than ever before. A short EP, but a good one. |
