I've never been too big on Death Angel, so I didn't really know what to expect getting into this new album. I was expecting Thrash, and got Heavy/Thrash instead – not a bad thing per se. As far as the Thrash parts go, this is rather tame; this is very "clean" Thrash – tight and quite melodic. The vocals follow suit – clean and barely aggressive, and in a few instances very melodic. A little more aggression in the vocals would have given this album some more edge. I was reminded a bit of Tankard's vocals, just more melodic and closer to "pure Heavy Metal" vocals.
This is Heavy Metal for the most part, mixing old school with a hint of the new and with a very clean sound. There's nothing here that'll wow the listener – at least not one who's heard quite a few albums, that is. Oftentimes I really had this "I've heard this before" feeling, and it just won't go away. There's also an overall goofy feeling to this album that keeps popping up – it's a very positive-sound album at times, not party-like but close, and it doesn't always feel right. Throw in a couple of acoustic tracks that water this down further. Overall I didn't find this much of an enjoyable listen, though I often found myself focusing solely on the guitar work which is top notch at times – tight playing, intricate melodies, the works. Decent, but not essential.
