Sabaton seem to have a pretty steady alternating hit/mass pattern going. With their last one, Art of War, being so awesome: I was hoping this would be equally cool, but I was expecting it to be a step down, which it is. Coat of Arms is pretty much Sabaton going through the motions.

Things start off well, with the traditional opener/title song "Coat of Arms" being a decent stomper. "Midway" is a lot like it, but still fun. "Uprising" is one of their slower, marching tunes – like "Gallipoli" – only not especially good, with predictable melodies and too many clichéd lyrics crammed into it. Some other songs kick up some dust, like "Screaming Eagles" and "Wehrmacht", but too many of the songs are like "The Final Solution" or "Aces in Exile" – overly familiar melodies, lackluster performances, and unimaginative songwriting. I know Sabaton can do better than this, because I have heard them do it many times, but here they are just recycling old material in a less-inspired form, and the rather weak production doesn't help matters. Songs like "Ghost Division" and "40:1" seemed to explode from the speakers and fall all over themselves with their energy and verve, but here Sabaton sound like they are just putting in studio time to get an album out the door. Sabaton have made some great albums, but Coat of Arms is not one of them.
