When I first heard of Sabaton and their lyrical focus on all things World War II, as a history buff, I was definitely intrigued. Two of my favorite things, history and Power Metal, in one place; what could be better? Attero Dominatus and Primo Victoria did not disappoint, so it was with great anticipation that I looked forward to the band's 5th full length, Coat of Arms. The formula Satabon has perfected on previously releases is employed again on Coat of Arms; crunchy guitars with huge hooks, supporting keyboards, World War II imagery and Joakim Broden's unique, gravelly vocals. What's missing is a spark of originality. When I say Sabaton follow the same formula, I'm not kidding. Fans of the band have heard everything on Coat of Arms before...from Sabaton themselves. That doesn't make the album bad; on the contrary, this is well executed Power Metal and the band shines on double-bass monsters like "Coat of Arms" and the crushing "Screaming Eagles." They've even resurrected their penchant for creating songs out of other bands' lyrics and/or song titles. "Metal Ripper" features lyrics for other Heavy Metal and Hard Rock acts and is fun if only to try and figure out which songs they came from (I picked out Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Queen and Ozzy Osborne the first time through.) Coat of Arms is undoubtedly well played and if this is your first exposure to Sabaton, you're in for a treat. If, like me, you've been following the band for a while, you may find Coat of Arms a bit stale. |
