Cuntscrape is an Australian Death Metal/Goregrind band that formed in 2006. Papsmear Campaign is their third release on the Prime Cuts label. I expected 23 tracks of GrindPornCheese but was surprised by what I heard. Just about every song on this album has a different style and only about half the album was metal, if that. I heard Jazz, Death, Hip Hop, Blues, Punk and some Grind. Papsmear Campaign opens with a song called "Hellatio" that has a slow Doom-like intro and has an extremely dark feel to it. This was impressive and I couldn't wait to hear the rest. Most of the instruments are clear throughout all of the tracks. The vocals are harsh on about two thirds of the album with the rest a mix of whatnot. There are a handful of comical interludes scattered around the recording that sound as if they were taken from 70's and 80's porn PSA's . The average track is about a minute long and this made me very happy. If M.O.D. and Carcass had a baby it might sound a little bit like Cuntscrape. The song titles and lyrics are relatively disgusting. For example: "Cum Fart Tart" made me queasy. And the lead singer's name is "Lord Labia." Yes, we get it! Overall the musicianship on this one is lacking and there is very little creativity within the individual songs. I'm starting to realize this band is still playing the "What's grosser than gross?" game a lot of us played as kids. I couldn't figure out, and still can't, what direction they are going in, but only some of these tracks have any actual Metal in them. |
