There's usually something exciting about French Black Metal, but sadly newbies Malhkebre don't exhibit such qualities with Prostration, their aptly named debut EP. There is nothing remotely tuneful about this; it is a wild cacophony of blast beats, discordant guitars, low grunts, tortured screams, and many painful passages, both fast and slow. Like the grisly stylings of Profanatica, Malhkebre mix brutal Black Metal with Death Metal and Grindcore to clamorous effect. They have a method of operation that reminds me of Neuroticism-era Carcass, especially in the vocals, which have more in common with Aborted, Exhumed and the like than your average Mayhem clone. The songs progress from raucous riots to depressive dirges without stopping for breath. There are moments when ambient elements take up the background and low, indecipherable groans burp over the top, making the listener nauseated to some degree. It is a disgusting listen that will have your brows furrowed and lips curled.
With a single redeeming feature in the production (which only sounds good when the band are going full belt during explosive sections), Prostration is a technical display for sure, but one that is so horrid and distasteful, it could sour your very passion for music.
