Krieg have made quite a name for themselves in the world of US Black Metal, and as their most lauded release (especially over here in the UK), The Black House certainly deserves some attention, though not too much. It is by no means an essential release, but rather a safe listen for the casual Black Metal fan, those who like their music drenched in blast-beats, throat-ripping vocals, and simple but effective guitar work. Not as experimental as some of their later work (The Isolationist, for example), The Black House is predominately fast paced, with a few exceptions in songs like "Venus In Furs", which is a kind of Black Metal ballad (I know; crazy!). The production has a warm analog feel to it, and while the riffs are heavy, the album doesn't sound it, washing over you with a fuzzy glow. Despite being a feared unit in some quarters, this is actually quite tame, and fails to deliver with the same aggression and threat as some of their associated projects.
There's not an awful lot of variation to be had, but some good songs appear. "Deviant" is your standard face-shredder, and "Ruin Under A Burning Sky" shines due to some demented vocals. "Murder Without The Burden Of Conscience" wins purely because of its name, while "A Process Of Dying" hashes out some memorable riffs, some of which are quite pleasing to the ear. In all, if you're buying records on a whim, and you want a harmless and traditional Black Metal affair, The Black House is pretty much perfect. But it's no masterpiece, ladies and gents. Not by a long shot.
