This album is like time travel. You slap it on, close your eyes, and are instantly transported to 1999, when this kind of half-assed overproduced crap was the best Power Metal you could get. I mean, I am always up for some melodic metal, and I keep loving fantasy-themed Power Metal even when so much of it sucks. I wanted to like this, but Derdian are so full of pomp and bombast, and so without songwriting skill, that they keep getting in their own way. This is hyperactive, keyboard-infested, short on guitar power and long on boring vocal melodies. Singer Joe Cagianelli is exactly what you expect from bad Italian Power Metal – decent, but with a rather weak voice and little real range. None of the performances here will wow you, nor will any of the songs. Derdian in the end come off as nothing more than Rhapsody wannabes, and imitating a third-rate band will not make you into a great one. Derdian aim low and miss. |
