It's hard to take an album called Total Fucking Slaughter by a band called Mutilated Messiah with complete seriousness. But if you do, then you're completely missing the point. This is a tribute to the early days of extreme metal, sounding like Venom, Hellhammer, and early Sodom. Frankly, if it weren't for the historical significance of such bands, do you honestly think people would take them seriously? I don't. It's the same deal here. This is simple, knowingly dumb music played only competently. It has one goal, and it's fun. If you're too high up on your horse to enjoy, then no problem. Because down here, we're doing fine. Total Fucking Slaughter (a title that makes me gleeful with immature excitement every time I hear it) sounds like the barebones style of hardcore punk amplified into metal. It's not complex music, and it shouldn't be. Despite the album's repetitiousness, it has an undeniable charm berthed out of its simplicity and its juvenile vulgarity. By its end, it gets boring and some songs don't have the fresh kick that others do, but that's to be expected with such primordial metal music. Adding to the album's charm is its live-like atmosphere, as the singer croaks out the title of many of the songs just as they open, much like during a live show. While this music may be dumb, it has its perks. If you're a self-respecting metalhead, and you can't enjoy the innate and childish fun of songs like "Motorcunt" and "Blow the Goat," then you're listening to the wrong type of music. This isn't going to win any points for intelligence (or tastefulness), but it's still a good album to sit back and thrash your head to. Please, indulge the same part of your brain that like pro wrestling and thinks that monster trucks are mad cool. You won't regret it. |
