This demo was released in 2004, so I have no frigging idea why it is in my mailbox now. I am generally suspicious of Prog, as too often it is just a bunch of technical workouts pretending to be music, but I actually like this pretty well. Dark Mass have no singer, rather choosing to focus on writing good tunes without having someone yelp all over them. Usually this is a sign of a band who are too spastic to write music you could sing to, but Dark Mass seem to have a real songwriting ethos beyond just "more", and these songs have tension, build, and resolution, like songs are supposed to. Surprisingly heavy, refreshingly wank-free, and with performances in the service to the compositions rather than the other way around, Dark Mass show more promise than most of the prog promos I get, and I hope this is not the only thing they ever record. |
