Skrypt are an Indian thrash metal act, with some progressive influence thrown in for good measure. They're also the only Indian metal band to feature a female guitarist. Not that it really makes any difference to the overall sound, but I guess it's the borderline interesting fact of the day.
On Discord Skrypt pimp out their sound through four tracks of varying quality. The vocals, in keeping with the theme of a lot of my reviews as of late, are the weakest link, sounding trendy and for a basis of comparison similar to that of those heard on the latest Revocation album. From the time I've spent with this release I get the impression that the band are batting above their weight, I don't believe the musicianship is good enough to achieve the musical goal set out by Discord.
Saying that, this is still good enough, with some nice crunchy riffing to be had as well as some decent grooves that could get a mosh pit going in a heartbeat. The drum work is probably the strongest side of the band's collective skills, and the production is modern enough to help these guys fly with a lot of the current crop. The guitar playing is good but not great, and their strengths are definitely in the grooves and rhythms with the lead playing being good enough to shred out scales and runs but lacking any sort of wow factor or memorability.
All in all there are some good ideas put out in this EP, and I can tell their hearts are in it. Give these guys and gal a couple of years to hone in their skills and they could certainly put out a good album. I'll be interested to see how Skrypt go over the years. Fans of modern-style thrash metal, groove metal and the like will find something to like in Skrypt. For the rest you can pass on this one.
