Raw, chaotic Black Metal with subtle melodies is what Finland's Verge offers us on To Rest the Last Time in Our Filth. Except for the outro which is basically a dark ambient track, this EP showcases some good "old fashioned" mid-90s Black Metal, complete with BM screeches that rip through the speakers. Intricate when not a bit repetitive, Verge's Black Metal is relentless but where it shines is in how subtly they've incorporated melody in what would otherwise be very abrasive and probably of the the "gets old quick" variety. Here the melody is almost always present but more as a background thing (except for a few short, quieter passages) and still gives precedence to the raw metal. The dark ambient outro is kind of disposable, though I never bothered to actually skip it as it's alright for what it is. Good stuff. |
