After almost seven years we're finally treated to the third offering from Belgian power metallers Magic Kingdom, this time around with the addition of the superlative Olaf Hayer handling the vocals, as well as a growler in Roma Siadletski (Iron Mask).

Symphony of War is a big album split over two discs. The first disc comprises standalone tracks, of varying length and similar quality, and the second features the almost 30 minute-long "Metallic Tragedy - Chapter 2: The Holy Pentalogy". Obviously if you hadn't guessed it by now these guys play power metal like it's 1999. Melodic vocals, neo-classical guitar work, symphonic elements, double kicking. Power metal fans, this is your proverbial wet dream.

This is exactly the kind of thing that drew me to the European power metal scene originally, high flying, over the top, no care for anything other than melody and showmanship. Recently I'd thought this style was starting to fade away, with everyone and their dog trying to go all mature on us. Fortunately the latest offerings from Rhapsody, Ancients Bards, and half of the latest Freedom Call killed those thoughts and Magic Kingdom can stand proud, flying the flag for neo-classical power metal.

I won't go on much further, as you probably already have a good idea as to what this sounds like. Tracks such as "Evil Magician", "We Rise", the quality title track and of course the gorgonzola yet awesome second disc are power metal bliss. Grab your wizard's hat, dust off your dungeon masters guide, ring the guys and get ready to fight in the tournament of hell! Recommended
