This is an entertaining but far from perfect disc of stripped-down, back-to-basics Heavy Metal. There are about six bands called Warcry, but this is unsurprisingly the German one. They are an idiosyncratic band and this sophomore album is a bit schizo. The production on this is rough, with the mix kind of wandering around like it can't decide which elements to emphasize. The guitar tone needs bite, and the riffs are rather muffled. The songwriting is derivative and not that memorable, and vocalist Martin Knotzele is all over the place with his main style being a kind of gargly Thrash style but throwing in some whacked-out screams for good measure. When he growls he sounds okay, even if it is a pretty flat approach without dynamic. His 'singing' is iffy at best, and he sounds not unlike Gerrit Mutz – which is not really a compliment. One thing Warcry do have in spades is enthusiasm, and there is a balls-out exuberance to this music that is just impossible to deny. For all its shortcomings, this album is fun, as it is a band that is having so much fun they don't even notice that they kind of suck. Largely indefensible, but still infectious. |
