Weapon have a bland name, but their music is pretty damned kickass. I was initially like "oh great another fucking Death/Black/Whatever album", but this is actually some quality Death Metal. Weapon start with a fuzzy, dirty guitar sound that sounds like it was recorded on a 500-year-old guitar, and then they smash out some killer fucking riffs with bits of Black and Thrash mixed in, as well as a dash of Mideast Music a-la Melechesh. The compositions are dense and satisfying, the vocals are vicious without being unintelligible, and the riffs are class. This is a band taking all the good stuff from old-fashioned Thrash and Death, adding a bit of Black Metal's bad attitude, and serving up a big, meaty album of evil nastiness. |
