Desultory were a band that popped up in the early 90s Swedish Death Metal scene and actually released three albums, the last being the critically reviled Swallow the Snake waaay back in 1996, in which they tried to ride the Grunge Wave and failed spectacularly. This is obviously the result of a reunion, and finds them treading the ground you would expect given their pedigree. Sure this is nothing new, but it is visceral and well-done. This marries the heavy crunch of old Swedish DM with an almost Gothenburg sense of melody without falling into suckdom with clean vocals or any other 'experimental' sounds. This is thrashy, vicious Death Metal that just has a greater sense of riff and melody than is the usual. Solid. |
