The dark atmosphere this album creates makes it a unique entry into the field of concept albums. There is a bleak and tortured aura that is beautifully woven into every track. The standard of quality and consistency is upheld here more thoroughly than on any other Nevermore album, which is what makes it their best work as a whole. Add to that the greatest performance by Warrel Dane and you have an outstanding album.

Although the epic track "Poison Godmachine" stands out, it's the standard of excellence that is upheld throughout that makes this album better than other ones like the recent slightly disappointing, yet good, The Obsidian Conspiracy. Every song has a dreary mood that is reflected by dissonant riffing, but a degree of aggressiveness as well. The album has elements of thrash, progressive and traditional metal blended into their sound simultaneously, so it is difficult to give them an overall tag. It's easy to identify the music here as gripping, however, right from the first solid track "Beyond Within". Other Nevermore albums such as This Godless Endeavor and to a lesser extent Dead Heart in a Dead World have tracks that stick out amongst the lot, but don't create the same cohesive whole that can be seen from the entirety of Dreaming Neon Black.

Listeners looking for a more intelligent experience will do no better than this album in the Nevermore discography. It creates an atmosphere that is wonderfully dark and involving. The songwriting skills of the band really shine through and though it does have a couple moments that don't quite measure up to the rest of the disc, the music here constantly keeps the listener glued to their seat for the most part.
