RAM's 2009 album Lightbringer received some mixed reviews here at The Metal Crypt and so I gave it a pass. If the band's new single, Under the Scythe, is any indication, they've stepped up their songwriting in a big way. Either that or I need to go back and check out Lightbringer.

RAM is all about 80s Heavy Metal, with a distinctly American bent. Track one, "Under the Scythe" is rip-roaring Speed Metal that sounds like Guns ‘n' Roses if they were A.) a Heavy Metal band, as opposed to a rock band, and B.) good. Singer Oscar Carlquist has a punch-you-in-the-face angry sound as opposed to Axl Rose's this is the wrong kind of mineral water angry. Track two, "Evil," is just that, with some great Savatage inspired guitar work. Getting some vocal help from Nifelheim's Hellbutcher doesn't lighten the mood of the song any, either. Slower in tempo, it is just as heavy as "Under the Scythe."

I like this single a lot and hope it is a preview of RAM's next full-length. I will be there to check it out, based on the strength of Under the Scythe.
