This is the release of Finnish death metal act Napoleon Skullfukk's two EP's Swollen and Torture Metal in one package. I've rarely been disappointed with Finnish death metal so I will admit I was salivating at this, even with the band's dumb name. Since this is two EPs, I'll try split the attention evenly. First up is Torture Metal, which is pretty cool and certainly the finer of the two. The band show some slight groove in their sound, but comes off a lot better than it does on Swollen. The vocals are decent enough growls, nothing that hasn't been done in the past but perfectly serviceable. This is the more old school death metal-sounding of the two which is no doubt a plus, on its own this would get a solid 3.75 because some of the riffs kill and "Codename Napoleon Skullfukk" destroys. As for Swollen, well I'm not sold. The death growls here have become more tough guy, and there is some almost pig squealing which I really don't like. The riffs are so much more groove-oriented which compared to some of the killers on Torture Metal is a shame. On its own I'd rate Swollen at around 2.5 as it is nothing special. Overall I'd recommend this to old school death metal fans if only for the Torture Metal tracks, and hell, if you enjoy the Swollen tracks that's a bonus. |
