Stormwarriors' new album Heathen Warrior is chock full of Power Metal hallmarks, from double-kick drums and crunchy guitars to lyrics about Odin and Vikings. It is certainly nothing new, sticking to the accepted conventions of the genre, which, if you're a Power Metal fan like me, is a good thing.

Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen gave Stormwarrior a helping hand early in their career by lending vocals and guitars to a few songs as well as playing live with them a few times. He apparently also gave them the blue prints for making a Gamma Ray album as well. Heathen Warrior sounds almost exactly like any Gamma Ray album released in the last 10 years or so, right down to Lars Ramcke's Hansen-like vocals. If imitation is the highest form a flattery, Hansen and crew should be mighty flattered indeed. Emulating your heroes is one thing, but copying them is another and Heathen Warrior is very close to the latter. That said; let me reiterate this is still fun, ballsy Power Metal that is very well played. My only other gripe is that it sounds TOO good. The production is far too smooth and polished for my taste. I prefer my Stormwarrior loose and raucous, like on their earlier releases.

So, basically, if you like Gamma Ray, Iron Fire, Timeless Miracle and the like you're bound to at least enjoy Heathen Warrior, if not love it. Just don't expect anything you haven't heard many times before.
