Dr. Living Dead! is a retro 80s outfit playing the Thrash/Punk style popularized by Suicidal Tendencies, Nuclear Assault and S.O.D. The frenetic riffs and high pitched screams of Dr. Ape (yes, everyone in the band appears to have graduated med school, as they all have "Dr." before their name) bring to mind Reign in Blood-era Slayer on a few of the tracks. I don't normally review stuff played by guys all wearing skull masks, as the Slipknot/Insane Clown Posse similarities are worrisome, but Dr. Living Dead!'s music is firmly rooted in the 80s. All the songs are short (not S.O.D. short, but you get the picture) and blazing fast. The lyrics are mainly horror inspired ("Chucky," "Slime from Above," "Reptiles Beneath") but like all good Thrash, there are some politically inspired tracks ("World War Nine," You're Not the Law.") Dr. Living Dead! have created a convincing California/skateboard groove on their self-titled debut. Even though Suicidal Tendencies and others have covered this ground thoroughly, fans of this style of Thrash/Punk should check them out. |
