This is a strange release from a strange band. Highgate play ultra slow, sludgy Doom Metal with Black/Death growls and rasps. Black Frost Fallout is a compilation of material from demos, live performances and previous albums. I realize these are demos but other than the guitars, which are thick and fuzzy, the entire album sounds terrible. The unintelligible cookie monster vocals are way back in the mix and sound weak and distant. The drums, especially the snare, are paper thin, and are helped not at all by the dull, tired playing. The songs range from agonizingly boring dirges to downright pointless instrumentals. Only "Burial Light," with its liquid bass lines, has any character. Nothing to see here. |
