Horned Almighty's Necro Spirituals is a slab of nihilistic black metal with pugilistic attitude. Rooted in an age-old pub or club as opposed to the forest, the album embodies a score of dirty leather clad, spike-bearing delinquents. The music is a violent nosebleed of first wave black metal influence squaring off against virulent hardcore and punk. You'll hear spots of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, early Bathory and of course a healthy spluttering of Motörhead. This is fast, aggressive, thrashing black metal that I'm surprised isn't on the Hells Headbangers label. Another surprise is the cleanliness of the production, I can't help but think this should have had a rawer sound, and could possibly alienate those looking for a fistful of filth. However in the same respect this could open a few more doors to those who are scared away by necro production but want to score some underground points. Those looking for standouts or tracks to check out need look at the likes of "Fountain of a Thousand Plagues", "The Age of Scorn" or "Illuminated Void", all of which would happily nail your testicles to the bar and smash a bottle around the head, offering a beer and a smoke afterwards to join the anarchy. Overall Necro Spirituals is good fun, and I'm sure fans of the style will find a solid dose of enjoyment. Fans of death n' roll, black n' roll or whatever you want to call that shit will no doubt enjoy the music here too. Horned Almighty are at their best when thrashing like mad – which is exactly what they do – resulting in an album to kill a few brain cells to. |
