I've been steering clear of most Melodic Death Metal in recent years, with the occasional exception – Battlecross being one of them. At the base, this is not all that different from your circa-2000 Melodic Death Metal, but what sets Battlecross apart is that they're more aggressive and heavier than bands of the genre generally are, also a bit faster at times. The vocals are very much what you expect for the genre – no surprises whatsoever here, and it's really the music that delivers the distinction here. It's not particularly original stuff of course, but the thrashy, raw, fast guitars are what have kept me coming back to this one. Pursuit of Honor never really let go and this pounds the hell out of the speakers from beginning to end. Definitely worth checking out if you had written off Melodic Death Metal – this album has guts. |
