The name Rough Angel had me thinking I was in for some average, poppy 80s-style U.S. Metal. What I got instead was some down-and-dirty Traditional Metal with echo-drenched screams and slow, heavy riffs that reminded me of some of my favorite bands from the late 80s, Cities and Sword. Hear the Angels Rock isn't quite as doomy as Sword's Sweet Dreams, but the slower tempos, crunchy guitars, and raw production are refreshing to hear amidst all the shiny, glossy music around today. The title track, the last on the EP, is the standout and begs you to throw up your fists and break out the air guitar. Hear the Angels Rock is a surprise and one that makes Rough Angel's debut full-length one I look forward to. |
