Medusa's Throne is advertised as Speed Metal, but I'm not hearing that myself. This is more of a raw and dirty old school Heavy Metal affair with kind of a punk/Thrash edge to it. The vocals are raucous and gruffy, very "garage-band like" and quite fitting for the band's style. The pace is anywhere from slow to fast ("Tower of the Elephant" is a cool fast one), but overall it feels a bit monotonous. The production is pretty thin and even though it kind of goes hand in hand with the "raw and dirty" style of the music, it could be a turn off for some people. Still, this is the kind of stuff that makes you smile if you like the underground demos of 30-odd years ago, the stuff that never really made it into the spotlight. Nothing earth-shattering, but enjoyable while it's on. |
