Wolfen's Chapter IV (their fourth full-length, natch) is a decent, if unoriginal, Germanic Power/Thrash album. There are some lowlights, but most of it is "turn off your brain and throw your fist in air" metal. There aren't any true standout tracks, but songs like "Soul Collector" and "Demons" pay tribute at the altar of the riff. The missteps include "I am I," a song with smooth melodies more suited to a Foo Fighters album and "Nefilim." This is a song that blisters away with some jagged riffing and a brisk tempo, but there's a high-pitched ringing going on in the background. This may be from a cymbal or some other extraneous source, but it is sure to drive sensitive ears and dogs crazy. It should have been fixed when the album was mixed. I neither love Chapter IV nor do I hate it. Ultimately, it is a moderately entertaining, if faceless, album. |
