Italy's Disease Illusion play Melodic Death Metal very much in the Gothenburg style, listing bands like Dark Tranquility, In Flames and At the Gates as primary influences. Despite Backworld being their first full-length album (after an EP in 2008), the band's playing is very tight and the songs are well put together. Disease Illusion do indeed, have a lot of melody in their songs, mostly courtesy of guitarists Federico "Feed" Venturi and Dario Armeli. Keyboards are used sparingly so Backworld never loses its heavy edge by veering into Symphonic territory. Fabio "Ferrucc" Ferrari's vocals are a standard growl that works well with the music. The songs are nothing you haven't heard and there are no real standouts yet there aren't any real weak tracks either. If you've had your fill of Melodic Death Metal, Backworld probably won't change your mind. If, however, this genre is your bread and butter, Disease Illusion does the style quite well and they are worth a listen. |
