Iron Mask plays some dark, aggressive Power Metal on their album Black as Death. Their sound features some neo-classical guitar work, but not the kind you need an advanced degree in musical theory to enjoy. I'm reminded of bands like Mystic Prophecy and Helstar when I listen to Black as Death. Songs like "God Punishes, I Kill," "Blizzard of Doom" and the title track deftly mix Power Metal staples like flashy guitars and double-kick drums with dark, aggressive melodies and lyrics. Black as Death breaks no new ground, but it is well played. Other than being overly long (a couple of songs towards the end could have been left off with no ill effects), it is quality Power Metal album. |
