I don't say this much, but Desultor's Masters of Hate is something I haven't really heard before. This is not to say it is original or anything like that, because it isn't. I was expecting the vicious riffs and insanely fast, blast beat drums but not the clear, shouted vocals. Nope, I was expecting harsh Death growls. As a result, Masters of Hate has been getting quite a bit of airplay on my iPod lately. Singer/guitarist Markus Joha has a vocal delivery in the style, if not the sound, of Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth or Michael Coons. Musically, apart from the slow, quiet and unnecessarily long instrumentals that begin, end and divide Masters of Hate, Desultor simply let it rip and blaze along at light speed. There's nothing new in the riffs, either guitar or drum, they've put together and frankly one song on the album sounds much like the next. What is clearly present is an energy that is undeniable and while Master of Hate can be described as "technical" Thrash, it isn't overly polished or produced.

Masters of Hate has the potential to appeal to both old and new Thrash fans though neither will be much surprised by anything they hear.
