Dragony is a Symphonic Power Metal band that hails from Austria, though their style had me initially thinking Italy. Despite a name that features one of the more egregious plays on the word "dragon" in the history of Metal, Dragony have released a solid debut, Legends. If the name wasn't clue enough, Dragony's lyrics concern tales of high fantasy. The cheese factor is high but singer Siegfried "The Dragonslayer" Samer (you thought I was kidding about the cheese factor?) delivers them with ample conviction to ensure you will be singing the choruses along with him. As has been something of a trend in the summer of 2012, the vocals aren't quite up to the level of power I'd like to hear. Musically, Legends is standard fare; instrumental intro ("Of Legends..."), speedy double-kicks ("Burning Skies" "Hero's Return"), slower, keyboard-driven songs ("The Longest Night") and big choruses ("The Ride.") The production is squeaky clean, the playing is tight and the overall catchiness is on the high side. Fans of Symphonic Power Metal with plenty of keyboards, like Ancient Bards, Conquest, Rhapsody, et al, should enjoy Legends. |
