This is the follow-up to last year’s Ars Sathanae EP, and it already shows tremendous improvement in moving away from the rather generic sound of their last work and forging into a more original direction. This time the band works a dark, heavy guitar sound and pounding riffs that sound much more like First Wave Black metal than Second. Maybe a liiiittle bit of post-metal works its way into the cracks in the form of some light acoustic moments, but the heaviness predominates and it is propulsive and convincing. The vocals may still be a bit one-dimensional, but with a deeper sound and some real melodies hooked into the chaotic sound, Iubaris seem to be headed in a really interesting direction. Raw, emotional, and dark. |
