Man :: Instincts is a 3-song EP from New Zealand's long-running Monsterworks. They've been around since 1996 but this is my first time hearing them. When I first started listening to Man :: Instincts I thought it had a cool sort of Doom vibe but the more I listened the more I realized the songs are actually trippy, almost Stoner Metal. There are harsh and clean vocals and mid-tempo, fuzzy riffing throughout the EP but the mix is a muddy. The guitars, which sound great in spots, often get lost in the background. I can't say I found anything in the songwriting that inspired much replay value. If an odd concoction of Warrior Soul, Orange Goblin and late-70s Black Sabbath, with a touch of Rage Against the Machine, sounds good to you, by all means, check out Man :: Instincts. I'm sure there will be fans of this music, I'm just not one of them. |
