Around sixty seconds after loading Inexorably Doomed to Cataclysm into my disc drive and hitting the play button I was sitting there thinking to myself: "What the fuck am I listening to?" Album number two from Spanish brutal death metal act Velocidad Absurda is an ironically absurd release that really doesn't appeal too much to this particular listener. The band's sound is a mass hybrid of atypical brutal death metal with all the ridiculous vocal techniques championed in that style. Mixing into the band's brutal DM sound is the odd-ball technical masturbatory and kind of apocalyptic-no-remorse style that acts such as Cattle Decapitation or Aborted are well known for. Whilst the latest Aborted album was undeniably cool, Velocidad Absurda shows little of the mastery of that better-known band and lose themselves amongst nutty riffing and change ups. Overall this isn't exactly bad by any stretch of the word, but it's far too odd-ball for my listening tastes. When the band settle into proper riffs they kick a good amount of backside, but far too often it feels as if they lose control and flick into an ADHD spasm of blasting and riffs where I can't even understand what's going on. If this sounds like something you might like, then I can assure you that this is pretty insane. Fans of the aforementioned Aborted, Cattle Decapitation and Skinless are going to want to check this one out, but anyone outside of the death metal circles would do well to steer clear. |
