Apocalypse 666, from the oddly named The Mystery, is an excellent album of melodic Power Metal. The songwriting is top-notch, so the album isn't just a collection of double-kick drums, squealing solos and high-pitched vocals masquerading as songs. The Mystery does a great job in the melody department and don't need keyboards to round out their sound. They remembered to leave the crunch in the guitars and I'm reminded of Iron Fire's Thunderstorm and Edguy's Mandrake. Speedy tracks like "Apocalypse 666" and "Death Lullaby" are great fun even though they break no new ground. Even the ballad, "In Heaven or Hell," is a solid Heavy Metal track and by no means will you want to skip it. The performances are solid and the sound is excellent. Fans of crunchy, yet melodic, Power Metal take note; The Mystery may have a strange name but the music will bring a smile to your face. |
