This is a down and dirty full-length for this Swedish band, who made a favorable impression on me with their EP The Devil's Night several years ago. Last time out I was seeing this as an Omen/Accept kind of band, but this time out one and only one major influence is in evidence: Venom. Very basic and stripped-down, this is a fistful of evil proto-metal songs in the definite vein of classic Venom, hell, vocalist Joakim Norberg is doing an almost perfect Cronos impersonation, and on "The Apparition" he whips out a pretty passable King Diamond too. These guys obviously know how to play better than Venom ever did, and there is quite a bit of flair to the instrumentation. The production could use some work, as rather than raw and dirty, this mostly sounds weak. Not essential, but fun. |
