Virginia's With Burning Contempt may have a modern-sounding name but the music on their EP, Red Visions, is anything but. With Burning Contempt is unashamedly old-school, taking their cues from 80s-era Celtic Frost, Bathory and the like. Harsh vocals that straddle the line between Death and Black are complimented by some great thrashy "Black 'n' Roll" riffing. The production is muddy and the top end is weak, not surprising for a self-release, but the songs still pack a powerful punch to the gut. With Burning Contempt are most successful at channeling their heroes when they pick up the pace, though they vary tempos quite effectively keeping Red Visions from ever getting repetitive despite the obvious 80s worship. With Burning Contempt promise nothing beyond simple, straight forward, 80s-style Heavy Metal and Red Visions delivers. |
