The debut release from Italian power metal upstarts Hydro nails the feel and sound of many of the late nineties acts. As a result those who enjoy this particular sound will feel right at home here on Bright Phoenix. As a fan of this particular style myself, I do find this an enjoyable enough release although it certainly doesn't break any new ground. I was expecting this to be a little more symphonic than it is, which has worked out as a good thing; a nice crunchy guitar tone paves the way for some enjoyable riffs. Of course this is Italian power metal, so I wouldn't go in expecting anything as voracious as the Germans serve up. Good musicianship, and quality, albeit slightly effeminate vocals keep the interest afloat over the run time of Bright Phoenix, and fans of this particular niche will no doubt want to check this out. A good effort. |
