De Bello Heroica, the debut full-length from Italy's Funera Edo, is an album of fairly standard Black Metal. The instruments all sound good with a full, thick guitar tone, both the riffs and tremolo picks, and drums that sound like actual drums, not the bottoms of plastic 5-gallon pails. The vocals, a shouted rasp, are neither a help nor a hindrance but fit into the songs just fine. Funera Edo's style is closest to Immortal, though more satanic, and they do manage to include a good deal of melody in their songwriting. They are certainly not symphonic, just drums/guitar/bass/vocals, but they are a long way from raw as well, making the album quite listenable. De Bello Heroica contains nothing new but Funera Edo plays Black Metal well and doesn't do the style any disservice. A capable start. |
